A study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics (October, 2009) found that 1 in 91 children in the United States have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As this rate continues to rise, it becomes clear that urgent attention is needed from educators, medical professionals, and policy makers. ASD knows no racial, ethnic, social, economic, lifestyle, or educational boundaries. Our VisionBased in Boynton Beach, Florida, the Slomin FAMILY CENTER will be a nationally recognized campus that promotes full participation in school, home, and community for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families in an environment crafted to invite exploration and social experiences. Our MissionNavigating the diagnostic and treatment maze often leaves parents feeling isolated and hopeless. Recognizing the formidable challenges faced by families confronted with ASD, The Slomin FAMILY CENTER will provide an accepting community that welcomes families and ensures empirically driven programs that emphasize social immersion for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our PhilosophyMirroring The Children’s Center for Developmental Enrichment and Oakstone Academy in Columbus, Ohio, unique programs at The Slomin FAMILY CENTER will emphasize the Social Immersion Model (SIM) for children with ASD. In these models, systematic and intense intervention is provided for children with ASD and embedded throughout normalized routines and delivered in age typical settings alongside of one’s peers. Although social immersion is essential for remediating the social deficits of ASD, siblings and peers also thrive in environments that teach tolerance and acceptance for others, while providing support for individuals to reach their fullest potential. Research finds that typically developing children participating in social immersion programs have higher levels of helping behaviors, peer cooperation, and conflict resolution skills. Community and Family ServicesA wide range of family-centered services will be provided to embrace children with ASD, their siblings, and others in the community. From providing a place to have a birthday party to taking your child to a dentist trained to work with children with ASD and their siblings, services will promote social engagement for all.
EducationalExcellence in childcare and education will be the hallmark of The Slomin FAMILY CENTER.
